We thank you SO much!
The doc’s may bark the orders but the nurses often are the one’s who walk you through the steps of anything going on medically or answer your questions.
Mostly they’re the ones who also provide the hope and faith that you CAN follow the new regime. They’re not usually concerned with medical liability, so they tend to be way more reassuring in telling you that things will work out.
If my life is spent acknowledging nurses and doc’s, than it’s a life well spent. Nurses especially, because they seem like the unsung heroes. They are not paid like doc’s and it certainly doesn’t seem like they have the respect they deserve. I know all of medicine now takes way more effort and has less stability, but it seems as there is more to do, the nurses are the ones doing it.
Nurses are a riot & love to laugh! I will never forget asking my friend Margaret about my gig for Medtronic, hosting a karaoke night for a room full of Certified Diabetes Educators (CDE’s). She said, “Oh nurses & educators LOVE to have fun, it’ll be great!” Well she was right. Instead of singing, ‘I am Woman’ I sang a custom version for them. I belted out, “You are strong, you are invincible, you’re an educator” and with the new lyrics, I was slightly off on the melody which totally through off the karaoke. I had to stop. I looked out at the crowd and said, “OK now no one has to worry about making a mistake, I already did.”
The audience just cracked up! They were so gracious, everyone relaxed and no one was worried about messing up after that. The night was glorious. I got to thank them for all they do for us patients. All their support, love and encouragement that we can do it! It was smashing!
I’ve acknowledged Holistic and most recently Critical Care Nurses. It was so moving to thank them and they were all a riot! Nurses want to let loose and enjoy themselves. This time I changed the words to ‘Your Favorite Things’ from The Sound Of Music and I loved 2 possible endings, so I used them both (click to listen while you read):
When the codes hit
when the response is cleared
When your done & feeling wired
You simply remember, your 12 hour day
AND THAT’S WHY YOU FEEL …SO TIRED
When the doctor’s bite
when the meds sting
when your patient’s sad
You simply remember that YOU SAVE THE DAY
and then you don’t feel so bad
I also sang, ‘What Do You Get With Critical Care Nurses’ which is loosely to the tune of ‘What Do You Get When You Fall In Love’ and the last 2 phrases were (click to hear & follow along):
YOUR KNOWLEDGE & LOVE
SIMPLY HELPS US GET THROUGH
WE FEEL SO MUCH BETTER
CAUSE WE DID WHAT YOU SAID TO DO
YOU SHOW US WHY
AND GIVE US THE FAITH TO TRY
CRITICAL CARE NURSES
WE’RE SO GRATEFUL FOR YOU
It’s an honor to say thank you to people who dedicate their lives to helping us feel better, especially when life gets scary. They are never paid or acknowledged enough. Nurses deal with life and death situations with a smile and a heart the size of Texas. The most fun was after playing with them, they gave me even more material to add to my lyrics. Nurses are a riot and very fun. And it’s a joy to thank them for all they do and acknowledge every moment of what seems like, their never ending patience.
